The newly-started Navjeevan, an initiative of the Maharashtra police to rope in those involved in Naxal movements to surrender and become part of the mainstream, has started showing results.

As much as four Naxals have already surrendered themselves before the police. This movement, said sources, would surely affect the Naxal hierarchy and their movement in the Naxal-infested part of the state.

“Four Naxals have already surrendered since the start of the Navjeevan initiative. Those surrendered are deputy commander and member level Naxals and belong to Gadchiroli area of the state,” confirmed deputy inspector general of police, Gadchiroli range, RG Kadam. He refused to divulge further details about these surrenders.

Those involved with this initiative said that these surrenders cannot be taken as a success or an achievement, but can surely be seen as a positive start of the initiative. “The actual result can only be measured after completion of six months of this initiative. Only after that much period we will be able to analyse how successful we were in bringing the Naxals back to the mainstream and what more we need to do,” said the officer.

The police expect to extract “valuable” information from the surrendered Naxals. “Before their rehabilitation, we would extract all information of strategic and tactical importance from them. As there will be more and more surrenders from the Naxals, the grip of the Naxal groups in the infested area would slacken,” said the officer.

The police have identified 250 families members of whom are into the Naxal movement and are actively working as cadres. The police are planning to cover all these families under Navjeevan and trying to convince them to leave the path of bloodshed. “These surrendered naxals had contacted with their families and through them had passed on the message to us that they wanted to surrender,” the officer said.

On April 3, Kadam had paid a visit to the residence of hardcore Maoist leader Dalsu alias Mainu alias Jogi Pusu Gawde, at Bolepalli village and met his elderly parents to convince him to surrender under their Navjeevan scheme. “Gawde is a senior Naxal. If we manage to bring back such senior Naxals through our scheme, then the impact will be much higher,” said Kadam.
