Modules of a single Hindu radical outfit were involved in the 2008 Malegaon blast and the explosions at Ajmer and Mecca Masjid in 2007. Swami Aseemanand supervised the execution of the operation in all the cases, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“We have so far been able to establish only one part of the conspiracy, that is who provided the logistical support in the Mecca Masjid blast. But the main conspirators and planters are yet to be identified and arrested,” CBI chief Ashwani Kumar told DNA.

Kumar said the CBI was investigating the Mecca Masjid blast, while the other cases were being investigated by the respective police agencies. “Investigations have revealed that different modules of the same group were involved in the blasts at Mecca Masjid, Ajmer Sharif and Malegaon,” he said.

The CBI chief refused to elaborate further on the probe, but said that the agency had announced a cash reward of Rs10 lakh each on absconding accused Sandeep Dange and Ramchandra alias Ramji Kalsangra last month. Their names had cropped up during the investigations into the Mecca Masjid blast case. Both Dange and Kalsangra are accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case too.

“We are working in tandem with local agencies to get more details on them,” said Kumar.

However, sources in the CBI told DNA that the group was suspected to be fully controlled by Aseemanand. “No reward has been announced on Aseemanand as of now, even though he is absconding. The last location of Aseemanand was in the Dangs district of Gujarat. We are on the lookout for him. He is believed to be involved in the conspiracy aspect of all three cases and have arranged the explosives and executors,” said a CBI source.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) also has intercepts of Aseemanand’s telephonic conversations with Sadhvi Pragya Singh, one of the prime accused in the Malegaon case. Aseemanand was using the cell phone of his driver Sunil Dhawade to converse with Thakur prior to the blast.
