In the recent past there have been many cases where kin of patients have assaulted doctors at the civic-run hospitals, following which doctors across India went on strike demanding stringent measures to ensure their safety. Keeping the incidents of attack on doctors in mind, the civic administration will bring a proposal to deploy additional security personnel at the city’s major civic hospitals. The proposal will be tabled during civic standing committee meet scheduled on Friday. The civic body will spend Rs 11.41 crore for deploying 321 additional security personnel for a year.
As per the proposal, a total 321 security personnel from Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) will be deployed at KEM Hospital, Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Nair Hospital and Dr RN Kapoor Hospital of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
In April, security at city’s major civic hospitals was beefed up after patients’ relatives allegedly assaulted the doctors in civic hospitals. Following the alleged attacks, around 4,000 resident doctors had gone on ‘mass leave’ for five days to protest against attacks.
The civic body had then deployed 400 security personnel from MSSC at major civic hospitals immediately. As per the proposal, 112 security personnel will be deployed at KEM Hospital, 104 security personnel at Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, 76 security personnel at Nair Hospital and 29 personnel at Dr RN Kapoor Hospital.
