Rattled Air India assures fliers its A320s are safe

A day after an A320 aircraft operated by Germanwings crashed in the French Alps with 150 people on board, national carrier Air India, which also has a large number of A320s, tried to reassure fliers through tweets that its fleet is safe and maintained as per regulatory norms. Air India has at least 20 A320 aircraft in its fleet of 112.

"#Committed #Safety We would like to reassure our valued patrons that Air India is fully committed to safety. All its aircraft, including A320 fleet, are maintained in strict accordance with regulatory authority's norms and are fully airworthy," tweeted the airline. A senior commander with the carrier said, "Its a safe aircraft."

Germanwing, the low-cost arm of German carrier Lufthansa, crashed into the French Alps on Tuesday, killing all 150 people on board. Although preliminary investigation has not found any fault with the A320 aircraft, the aviation world is abuzz with questions regarding the possibility of technical failure.

Considered to be among the safest in the world, the A320 family is widely used across the globe. According to an analysis done by rival aircraft-maker Boeing, A320 fleet has a rate of 0.14 fatal accidents per every million take-offs, over the past five decades.

According to data available with air safety tracking website, Airsafe, A320 has so far been involved in six crashes since 1988, when an Air France flight 296Q crashed into trees during an air show when the aircraft failed to gain height during a slow pass with the gear extended. Three of the 136 passengers were killed during the accident. Similarly, in February 1990, Indian Airlines A320 flight 605, which took off from Mumbai for Bangalore. The aircraft landed about 400 metres short of the runway. Four of the seven crew members and 88 of the 139 passengers were killed.
