Railway Police Force nabs five from Delhi who stole mobiles in Mumbai

The gang operated by five persons used to execute their theft in public places mainly during peak hours taking advantage of the bustling crowd during the festive season.

The Railway Police Force (RPF) have busted an outstation gang which was looting cell phones, especially from devotees coming for the for the darshan on the eve of Ganpati Visarjan. The cell phones recovered, were stolen from passengers commuting between Dadar and Chinchpokli railway stations and also from those devotees who were paying a visit to Lalbaughcha Raja. The gang operated by five persons used to execute their theft in public places mainly during peak hours taking advantage of the bustling crowd during the festive season. 21 mobile phones worth Rs 4.75 lakhs have been recovered.

As briefed by the Mumbai police earlier, the security arrangements were beefed up on looking at the huge public crowd on the day the Ganpati immersion on Sunday. Similarly, officers of the Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) were deployed at Chinchpokli station on platform 1 and 2 on Sunday where a case mobile theft helped the cops to uncover a bigger mobile theft racket being operated in the city.

According to the police, a passenger identified as Dynaneshwar Jagtap's cell phone was stolen by the accused identified as Harishkumar Amarsingh. Jagtap complained to the on-duty officers that Amarsingh tried to remove the phone from his pocket and escape with it. Amarsingh who is a Delhi-based cab driver revealed that he had stolen more handsets from railway stations and four other people were involved along with him.

Based on the inputs provided by Amarsingh, the police nabbed another accused identified as Ramkishan Sharma (28) from a lodge and found out that two rooms were booked in the names of the five accused who were planning to head to Delhi.

"The modus operandi of the accused was to go to public places with a huge crowd and steal mobile phones of the victims who are usually travellers of local trains. They were planning to leave the city immediately after the festival ended. The phones recovered were all stolen on the day of Ganpati visarjan. Seven owners of the phones have been contacted and other owners are yet to be identified." said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Western Railway, Purushottam Karad.

CHARGES

Those arrested have been charged under section 392 (punishment for robbery), 34(acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and section 147(trespass and refusal to desist from trespass on railway property) of the Railways Act.
