PNB staff was lured to be a part of scam, says charge sheet

However, the chargesheet states that juniors developed cold feet and refused to be a part of it.

The witness statements in the CBI chargesheet on the PNB scam has revealed that the bank employees were luring their juniors to be a part of the scam and favor Nirav Modi and his company. However, the chargesheet states that juniors developed cold feet and refused to be a part of it.

"I was assigned portfolio of imports. I was required to attend to the lodging of import bills submitted by the account holders, opening foreign letters of credit, foreign letter guarantee and sending SWIFT messages to Overseas Bank. Between September to November 2017, two LoU's on accounts of Diamonds R Us. Solar Exports and Stellar Diamonds were opened by me on the orders of Yashwant Joshi, the manager of Foreign Exchange Department (FOREX)," read the witness statement.

The witness said that she was following the orders of her immediate senior Yashwant Joshi, who was managing the Foreign Exchange Department (FEDEX)."Joshi had informed me that the firms named in the charge sheet belonged to Nirav Modi. I was introduced by Joshi, to some employees of the Nirav Modi owned group, Firestar group used to visit the FEDEX department," read the statement.

On July 17, Subash Parab and Miten Pandya, employee's of Nirav Modi had come to the department and met Joshi, who in turn had asked the witness and her colleague, Jasmine Makhwana to join them for lunch, but they declined.

The charge sheet further reads that neither Joshi or Bechu Tiwari, the chief manager, had told the witness that the three firms did not have any sanctioned limit for LoU. In December 2017, Joshi had told the witness in presence of Jasmine Makawana, that he had met Nirav Modi and Vipul Ambani of Firestar group and that Modi had requested him to continue opening of LoU's on behalf of his three firms without entering in the Core Banking System(CBS). He also added that the bank should not ask for hundred percent profit margin.

"Joshi had also told Modi that the bank employees will be taken care of and he had deployed Vipul Ambani for this," read the charge sheet.

"We both were shocked by the offer. However, Joshi asked us to not to discuss the matter with anyone," the witness further added.
