In a setback for Mumbai Port Trust's (MbPT) plan to construct an eight-km long ropeway between Sewri and Elephanta Island off the Arabian Sea, only two firms have shown interest to construct. This ropeway is aimed to boost tourism and also offer a bird's-eye view of the flamingoes at Sewri and also of the proposed Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).

The MbPT had floated expression of interest (EOI) for parties keen to construct the Rs 414 crore ropeway. Six companies had shown interest initially, but only two have submitted their interest.

Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman, MbPT, confirmed that six international firms had shown interest initially. "The interested companies are conducting a study on the project. We had also conducted a feasibility study for the project, but the companies are also independently conducting the study."

"France-based Poma and another firm named Conveyor system have shown interest. Additionally, two more firms have shown interest and they will submit their proposal in a few days," said a MbPT official.

"Our consultant has stated that the success of this project will depend on approval of authorities — the Directorate Of Archaeology & Museum, along with forest and environmental clearance for mangroves and mudflats," added the MbPT official.

The poor response by the interested companies can pose a challenge for the government to start construction. Consequently, there a round of re-bidding will have to held to get competitive bidding. This might delay the project and also compel the government to scrap it if the companies carrying out the study don't find the project feasible.
