Demonitization and its after effects haven’t been sitting too well with Mumbaikars. Standing in long ques for hours together, a number of people suffered from the merciless October heat. After a man in Mulund suffered from a recent heart attack, succumbing later to the same, Silver Innings, an NGO, decided to distribute food packets and water bottles to those in line.

Sailesh Mishra, founder of Silver Innings said, “I stood in line myself on Saturday. It is so tiring and it dehydrates you so much. You cannot even leave the line and use the washroom, let alone going to eat food or getting water. People of all castes and age, stood in line all throughout the day. Hence, I thought of doing whatever I could.”

Silver Innings Foundation is an NGO that works towards creating an Elder Friendly World where ageing becomes a Positive and Rewarding Experience. Mishra and his volunteers started early in the morning, going to a couple of bakeries in Mira Road to buy bread and butter. They ordered for water bottles and distributed over 200 food packets to people outside two banks in Mira Road.

People who were hesitant initially later were quite content in taking the food, he said. “Some felt shy, while others who did not need food or water bottles, requested us to give it to those who needed it. It was a happy feeling. A chain of humanity was built,” he informed.
