Commuters from Kasara, Karjat no longer have to come to Thane to take a train to Vashi. The work for a new Digha station on Kalwa-Airoli route was flagged off last Monday. This new station is will not only shorten the journey of commuters but also decongest Thane station.
On May 7, the work for Digha railway station on Kalwa-Airoli elevated rail corridor began. The pujan of this MUTP III project was done by Thane MP (member of parliament) Rajan Vichare. "This new station will be a boon to all those commuters from beyond Thane who work in Navi Mumbai," says Vichare.
The need for Kalwa-Airoli corridor was raised by Rajan Vichare in 2014. It was approved by then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu with a budget of Rs 428 crores. In December 2016, the bhumi pujan of this proposed railway route was also done at the hands of our prime minister Narendra Modi. Since then there was no further progress on the subject due to land acquisition issue. "Now the rehabilitation of those to be affected by this project has also been approved," he says.
The cost of the corridor, has has now escalated to Rs 519 crores out of which Rs 100 crores have been sanctioned for Digha and as compensation to people who were displaced due to the project.
