Mumbai: Spike in Gujarati voters music to BJP ears

Political parties agree that there was an increase in the margin over the voting percentage but some claim there was a dip in the percentage in several booths when compared to 2014.

Voter Turnout in Gujarati dominated areas of the city was more than average turnout in their respective constituencies.

In Mumbai South, the total voting percentage was 50.69 per cent, while in Gujarati, Jain stronghold Malabar Hill, it was 56 per cent. In Mumbai North total the voter turnout was 58.49 per cent, while in the Gujarati belts like Borivali, Dahisar and Charkop, it was 66.19 per cent, 62.39 per cent and 60.80 per cent respectively.

The voting percentage in Mumbai North Central stood at 53.64 per cent, while in Vile Parle it was 61.02 per cent. In Mumbai North East the total voting percentage was 57.15, but in areas like Mulund and Ghatkopar East, the percentage stood at it stood at 63.66 per cent and 61.27 per cent respectively.

Nilesh Dave, editor of Gujarati daily claims that there are a lot of factors behind high turnout. "Time specific campaigns were run by the people in the community to improve turnout," he said.

In Gujarati-dominated areas like Ghatkopar, housing societies served food like Aamras Puri and Undhiyo after people showed their inked fingers.

Ramesh Solanki, of Shiv Sena, said, "Gujaratis are patriotic people, the Gujarati community was very happy with the steps taken by Narendra Modi govt to hit back Pakistan like surgical strike and Balakot strike. Abhinandan release was another reason and Shivsena-BJP coming together was the final factor Gujjus came out and voted in large number. Gujaratis have always voted for NDA."

Even Jains came out and voted in good numbers. "We voted en masse for BJP and Shiv Sena," said a Jain leader who is a supporter of BJP.
