April 20 (4/20) is big day for those who smoke marijuana. While not many are aware of the origin of the traditions of this date, or know why it's such a big deal in the first place, the date resonates with the desi stoner community.

Khar resident Ashish Joshi said, "There are many underground spaces where weed smokers gather on this day to celebrate what we believe is the birthday of singer Bob Marley (a supporter of cannabis). These places can be a little sketchy, but as it's a very small community and people can hardly afford to smoke in common areas, so they resort to such places. I've wanted to observe this day as a weed smoker's day but it's not always possible as there are many aspects we need to take care of. However, I doubt that anyone knows the real reason why this date is famous. To be honest, even I don't know."

The term was coined by a group of five San Rafael High School (US) friends known as the Waldos — by virtue of their chosen hangout spot, a wall outside the school. coined the term in 1971. They would light up frequently but only at 4.20pm and share the joint.

In the US, with 23 states having decriminalised marijuana, albeit for medicinal purposes, with the exception of Nevada, where all above the age of 21 can purchase the four-leafed drug, 420 (as the day is known) is a growing counterculture trend.

However, the tradition has left many teachers and parents uncomfortable. "It's understandable that society won't be comfortable with something like this. That's why I'm not sure that legalising weed would allow us to have a similar public gathering in India. The social stigma associated with smoking marijuana is extremely strong," said Karan Nair, an entrepreneur and partner at an adventure sports company.

"While it's outrageous that weed is slotted with psychotropic drugs that are far more hardcore in their effects, I don't think marijuana should be legalised, it will really raise the prices."

Senior inspector of Anti Narcotic Cell's Azad Maidan unit Suhas Gokhale said, "While some western countries have legalised marijuana, in India it will never happen because it's a starting drug; once someone starts doing weed they follow it up with hash and harder drugs. Additionally, cultivation of the marijuana plant requires more water and nutrients, which is also responsible for the state of famine in California currently."
