The residents of Dhobi ghat, that is under going redevelopment, sent a letter to developer Omkar Realtors last month, seeking clarity on how many storey tower developer is planning to build. They also asked several other questions, pertaining to corpus fund and other such issues. There was apparently a rumour that the developer was only constructing one rehab building for the slum dwellers and every floor would have 54 apartments. The developer has busted the myth and clarified that they will be constructing two buildings, comprising five wings.

The letter signed by S Amberkar, mentioned as chief promoter of Shri Saibaba Nagar, SRA Cooperative Housing Society (proposed), was sent to the developer on May 26. It had a total of nine questions. There were several questions asked in the letter, most of which pertained to the height of the building.

When contacted, Omkar Developers refuted the rumour of constructing only one rehab building for the slum dwellers, with 54 flats on each floor.

Kaushik More, Director, Omkar Realtors said: "As per the present plan, we have designed two buildings (ground + 41 floors and ground + 30 floors), consisting of three wings and two wings each. Thus averaging 15 units (tenements) on each floor."

The developer claimed that they haven't yet received the said letter, but responded to the other questions raised by this newspaper. There were certain allegations that the ropes, which are used by the dhobis for drying the clothes, were being bought by the developer. More refuted this claim, too. He said: "The drying clothe ropes are linked to stone licences issued by MCGM. Rassi (ropes) cannot be acquired standalone. It has to be acquired along with the licence, with due permission from MCGM. We have not acquired any such licence for that matter, thus these allegations hold no merit."

There was fear that the stones, which have been a symbol of Dhobi Talao, will be gone post redevelopment. However, it was clarified that the area of washing stones is not even a part of the project or scheme and the heritage property of washing stone area is across the BMC road and far from the scheme.

The scheme comprises of around 3,000 tenements, of which close to 2,650 tenants have been evacuated. The construction of the project has reached the plinth level for the first rehab building, approvals like commencement certificate are in place.
