A high-level meeting between the transport department, petroleum and explosives safety organisation, and taxi and autorickshaw unions, took place on April 20 to discuss the use of forged CNG tank plates, faulty or no inspection of these tanks and the cost incurred by taxi and auto drivers for the same.

According to sources, the government agencies have approved the idea of embossing QR codes on the CNG metal plates which decipher the condition of the CNG tank and the date it needs to be inspected. The auto and taxi drivers have been buying duplicate metal plates and embossing the details of the vehicle. Based on the date of inspection, they can refuel CNG in their autos and taxis.

"The QR code will eliminate the scope of forged CNG plates installed in tanks. We have also been asked to inspect the vehicles directly at the plant rather than a third party getting tanks in bulk," said an owner of a CNG tank testing agency.

Sources in the RTO said that until now these tanks were also being removed in an unprofessional manner and taken for inspection to the plants. "Our autos and taxis will directly go the plants for testing. The drivers shall pay Rs 2,500 for the test," said Thampi Kurien, auto rickshaw union leader.

The unions also threatened that if the testing agencies do not give separate certificates of ultrasonic and hydro tests then they want the government to scrap the method itself. In the last two days, a committee inspected the plants and now the testing agencies have been given time till July 31 to improve its condition or face consequences. Sources said that not all testing agencies had the right equipment for inspection.
