Mumbai police communal & Afzal Usmani innocent, says Abu Azmi

Calling 2008 Ahmedabad blasts accused Afzal Usmani innocent, the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) state unit has blamed the state police force for implicating him, terming it communal. Moreover, SP state president Abu Azmi also said that the “mentality” of the police force is evident, with reports that say police commissioner Satyapal Singh was joining the BJP.

Usmani has written a six-page letter to Azmi from the anda cell in Arthur Road Jail, where he is currently lodged. In the letter, he has insisted that he is innocent and was falsely implicated by the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and the crime branch.

Presenting the letter at a press conference on Saturday, Azmi said, “This letter explains the functioning of the state government. Muslims are targeted and implicated in false cases by the police force.”

Azmi also questioned government intelligence agencies, saying, “What were these agencies doing when Satyapal Singh was getting closer to the RSS during his Nagpur posting?”
