The Mumbai Crime branch has arrested a man for allegedly creating a fake email id and sending defamatory emails to senior government officials naming a government official who has allegedly been taking bribes in exchange of giving lucrative postings.

The accused, Sarvesh Yadav, had emailed a 'rate card' for transfers to senior officials in the state government office in South Mumbai.

According to sources, on receiving the e-mails, the officials summoned the government employee by whose name the emails were sent. It was then revealed that he was not guilty of it. The officials then approached the Mumbai police and lodged a complaint following which an FIR was registered.

"Our investigation revealed that the email was sent to defame government officials and harm their reputation. While probing the case, we learned that the said emails were sent from an Internet Protocol address in Mumbai. Following this, we traced down the accused and arrested him. The accused is currently in police custody and we are grilling him to ascertain the exact motive behind the act," said a source.

"The emails were forwarded to all senior officials in the Mantralaya to raise doubts about the transparency in the the transfer process," the source said.

The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act for forgery, defamation, identity theft, and cheating by impersonation.
