Mumbai: Gopal Shetty files nomination papers

Retaliating to the criticism made by Matondkar over Shetty distributing pamhlets in Gujarati, he said that he has pamphlets printed in four languages; Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, and English.

Thanking the Congress party for fielding film personality Urmila Matondkar against him, BJP's sitting MP from Mumbai North Gopal Shetty, on Tuesday, said that he is being taken to a national level by TV channels because of Matondkar. He asked his rival to clarify if she is allergic to the Gujarati language.

After filing his nomination papers at the Collector's office in Bandra, Shetty said that he does not see any challenge in the candidature of Matondkar, but looks at it as an opportunity to increase his victory margin than last time. Retaliating to the criticism made by Matondkar over Shetty distributing pamhlets in Gujarati, he said that he has pamphlets printed in four languages; Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, and English.

Shetty was accompanied by four BJP MLAs — Minister Vinod Tavde, Yogesh Sagar, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Manisha Chaudhary — and Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve and Sena MLC Vilas Potnis. Saying that he was even ready to print his pamphlets in Tamil, Shetty added, "Different languages is the beauty of our country and if at all Congress has any problem with or allergy to any language like the Gujarati language, they should spell it out".

Earlier on Tuesday morning, Shetty took out a roadshow from Shyama Prasad Mukherjee chowk by garlanding the sculpture of Mukherjee. The roadshow ended at Malad after walking for almost 7 km and thousands of his supporters participated in it. The event had citizens from various walks of life and from various communities — Gujarati, Marathi, and Rajsthani. The people were seen wearing a traditional attire and saffron coloured Chowkidar caps. The roadshow, which started at Borivali, passed through SV Road to end at Malad's Chincholi Gate. Shetty then, proceeded to Bandra and filed his nomination papers.
