Mumbai: Drugs worth Rs 40 cr seized in seven months

The drugs which most commonly comprises of Cocaine, Heroin, Cannabis, Methamphetamine and Ephedrine has been seized in significant quantities within a span of seven months, the police said.

As part of a series of actions taken to clear the menace of drugs in the western suburbs, the Mumbai Police have seized drugs worth Rs 40 crore from January till July 2019. The drugs which most commonly comprises of Cocaine, Heroin, Cannabis, Methamphetamine and Ephedrine has been seized in significant quantities within a span of seven months, the police said.

Apart from the crackdown on drugs, the police have also arrested a total of 93 people who allegedly smuggled the narcotic substances in the western suburbs and were employed in drug peddling business since a while.

Recently, under the direction of Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region), Dr Manoj Sharma, the Santacruz police had arrested three men who sold drugs in the vicinity and had booked them under section 55(1) of the Bombay Police Act which deals with the dispersal of gangs and body of persons.

Speaking to DNA, Sharma said, “A few well-known colleges and schools in the region are increasingly becoming trading centres of peddlers to supply drugs to youths and this supply chain has been successfully dismantled after we took strict action on Pan and cigarette shops situated close to colleges and demolished a few of them.”

Among the 93 arrested accused, the police said that many foreign nationals including Nigerians and Brazilians are included in the list of peddlers who travel long distances just to supply drugs.

Sharma added, “A total of 70 kilograms of drugs has been seized and 73 cases have been registered where the accused have been under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. In the seven months span, Bandra has 13 cases, Santacruz has 11, Oshiwara has 9, DN Nagar and Amboli has 6 cases reach respectively.”

A police source said that in the last three years, the seizure of drugs in the western region is the most as compared to other regions of the city and by following the leads behind the drug seizures, the police have busted total three factories in Maharashtra where the substance was processed, manufactured and supplies to peddlers.

Police Inspector Daya Nayak of Khar police station who is accredited for many drug seizures said, “Party drugs surface only occasionally but other drugs like Cocaine, Heroin and Ephedrine is visible in the suburbs. We have intensified the surveillance for further crackdown on drugs.”
