The number of personnel from Mumbai's police force who consumed tobacco has reduced drastically from 70 per cent in 2015 to 35 per cent in 2017, according to the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA). The organisation attributes this dramatic decline to awareness drives carried out across the city.

Anita Peter, Executive Director, CPAA, said, "Anti-tobacco campaigns were carried out across a number of police stations in the city. Policemen were sensitised on the harmful effects of tobacco. Oral examinations were also conducted and those with early medical symptoms were advised to consult doctors."

Peter also said, "Most of them genuinely wanted to quit the habit but found it difficult due to work-realted stress and long duty hours."

CPAA has screened as many as 1,500 policemen from stations at Marine Drive, Mata Ramabai Marg, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Sion, Matunga, Worli, Dharavi, Mahim, Nagpada, Byculla Jail, and Malabar Hill.

Possibly as a move to encourage more policemen to give up tobacco consumption, five policemen, who were the first ones to give up tobacco consumption, will be sent on a four-day holiday along with their families to Srinagar and Kulu-Manali.

CPAA observed that younger policemen were more prone to tobacco consumption. This is primarily because many of them come from smaller towns where exposure to the substance start at an early age.

A CPAA survey had revealed that 70 per cent of a sample set of 3,000 policemen consumed tobacco and of them, around 35 per cent of them had begun developing precancerous conditions.

The association had launched the Tobacco Free Mumbai Police Station drive in 2015, and it has, so far, proved very effective.
