One month after operations of Monorail got fully operational mere 5.55 lakh passengers have used the services venerating revenue of around Rs 96 lakh. The operations of Monorail got fully operational between Chembur and Mahalaxmi got operational on March 4, 2019 around 10 years after its construction started.

According to data shared by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) around 5.55 lakh passengers used Monorail between March 4 and March 31, 2019. Daily between 20,000 to 30,000 commuters are using Monorail since March 4, however, earlier since 2014 when the first phase between Chembur and Wadala was functional around 12,000 to 15,000 commuters used to travel using the Monorail.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had show green signal to the second phase of Monorail between Wadala and Mahalaxmi claiming monthly around 30 lakh commuters will use the Monorail but that has not been possible yet. A MMRDA official said, "Monthly 30 lakh passengers will use when all at least around 8 trains are functional. Currently only around 3 to 4 trains are functional, and rest are grounded due to need of repair works."

According to MMRDA officials, ridership takes time to increase. One of the reason why there is less ridership for Monorail is its low frequency. The frequency that Monorail is able to maintain is 22 minutes to 45 minutes. When two out of total four functional trains go for maintenance, the frequency goes up from 22 minutes to 45 minutes, and this is one of the reason for less passengers.

The reason why there is low ridership is also because of less frequency of the services that varies from 22 minutes to 45 minutes many times. Rahul Singh, a Monorail commuter says, "I travel between Chembur and Lower Parel using Monorail but at times when I am short of time I ensure not taking the Monorail considering my travel time will be much more than local train or even by say road. The frequency should be brought down to 10 minutes for it to be getting more passengers."

Meanwhile, out of the total 17 Monorail stations, Chembur, Bharat Petroluem near Chembur, Mahalaxmi, Wadala Bridge and Lower Parel Monorail station get the maximum ridership when it comes to handling passengers.
