The police have slapped stringent sections of buying and selling the minor girl on the Mira road couple for allegedly assaulting and torturing the 11-year-old girl who was working as a domestic help.
On Monday, the police learnt that the girl’s hands were tied and her mouth gagged and was locked inside the toilet until she fainted.
Sarjil Ansari, 38, and his wife Farhat,35, live in the posh Poonam Crown Apartments in the Govind Nagar area of Mira Road (East). Sarjil has been arrested but Farhat is absconding.
They allegedly assaulted the minor girl after purchasing her from her parents from their native village Badaun in Uttar Pradesh for Rs15,000 on the pretext of adopting and educating her.
When the girl took the couple’s 18-month-old baby for a walk, she narrated her ordeal to them.
After hearing the cruelty meted to the 11-year-old, the neighbours decided to rescue the girl with the help of the NGO.
“Women police officers in plain clothes met the victim and she revealed gory facts of torture. The couple would insert chillies in her private parts and force her to eat them. The girl was made to stand the whole night if she did not complete the chores and was also locked in the toilet as punishment until she fainted and was not given food,” said a police officer.
“We have increased the section of the Indian Penal Code of 372 (selling minor for purposes of prostitution, etc) and 373 (buying minor for prostitution, etc) against the couple. Sarjil was produced in Thane court and he has been remanded to police custody till January 21. His wife is absconding,” said Arun Nikam, the investigation officer, Mira road police station.
“The minor girl is traumatised. She is undergoing counselling and treatment at an NGO,” said a neighbour on the condition of anonymity.

The Mira Road couple bought the girl from Badaun area of Uttar Pradesh for Rs15,000 a year ago, They promised the girl’s parents that they would take care of her and educate her in Mumbai.
However, the residents of Govind Nagar in Mira Road (East) forced the minor to do menial household chores and take care of their 18-month-old daughter.
