In a good news for homebuyers, particularly those looking for affordable homes in the extended suburbs of Mumbai, MHADA's Konkan board may soon promote the lottery of over 3,000 houses in Virar, which the housing corporation received in March.

Seniors officials from MHADA said the Konkan board's decision to proceed with the lottery was taken after the delay in Mumbai board lottery.

All the homes under Konkan board measure nearly 30 sq mts and are located in Virar. This is a part of the ongoing construction being carried out by MHADA's Konkan board in Virar. MHADA had already in previous two lotteries sold 1,716 homes in 2014 and 4,275 homes in 2016 lottery. These last lotteries had homes in the lower income group (LIG) and the price it was sold at was Rs 22 lakh each.

A senior official said, "We have plans to come with the advertisement for the lottery by June, and once the advertisement is out, we within 45 days will hold the lottery. The homes are ready and hence there wouldn't be much of a trouble."

When contacted Vijay Lahane, chief officer, Konkan board, he said, "I cannot say it now, I will come to a conclusion after a review meeting with my officers."

In the meeting, prices of the homes will also be deicded. According to a senior official, all the homes in Virar fall under LIG. Going by the last lottery sold in this segment in Virar, where the price per home was close to Rs 22 lakh, the rates won't rise much this year too. "It is a good thing to have a lottery, MHADA homes are cheaper, if not in Mumbai even Virar is a good option. MHADA construction has improved too. I anyway need a home that will fit my budget so MHADA home is always welcome," said Sushant Patil, a prospective homebuyer.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai lottery also this year has a focus on LIG and economically weaker section. A tentative list shows that only two homes in the Mumbai lottery are for the Higher Income Group (HIG). While the Mumbai board lottery is yet to be scheduled, the Konkan board lottery will bring in some respite to homebuyers.
