The state government will seek funds from the Centre in order to construct a dedicated jetty at Nariman Point to ferry visitors to the proposed Shivaji Memorial, which has been proposed to be built up 200 metre out to sea.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) will communicate with the Centre over funds for the construction of the Rs 250-crore jetty in South Mumbai, which can also be used for transporting passengers between Nariman Point and Borivali, officials said.

Last year, the MMB had proposed to construct a jetty at Nariman Point, near the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA),  which is expected to have dual usage — for a water transport service as well as to take passengers to the Shivaji Memorial site.

The travel to the memorial site will be shortened with the new jetty, considering that currently, it is planned that visitors would  take a ferry from the eastern end at Gateway of India  and go roundabout to the site, which is off the city’s western coast.

As per the estimation, the distance between the memorial site and Nariman Point is a mere 3 miles, compared to the distance of around 12 miles from the Gateway.

The construction of the jetty will be under Central government’s Sagarmala programme, which is aimed at modernisation and upgradation of water transport infrastructure in the country.

An MMB official said, “The construction cost will be under Rs 250 crore and around 50 per cent of it will be sought from Central government.”

According to MMB officials, private land would not have to be acquired for the project; the required four acres of land will be reclaimed. MMB is currently in the process of getting clearances including that of the environmental authorities  for reclamation.

Preliminary construction work for Shivaji Memorial kicked off after the work order was awarded earlier this year. Thousands of visitors are expected to visit the memorial, and a dedicated jetty is required to avoid a crowd gathering at the Gateway of India, officials said.
