Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that his government would provide Rs1,000 crore for the Jalyukta Shivaar Abhiyaan, which is aimed at getting rid of drought from 5,000 villages in the next one year. He instructed the officials to release Rs600 crore by June.

Fadnavis also informed that the Abhiyaan would be officially launched on January 26 and it would undertake various projects aimed at eradicating water scarcity.

The chief minister reviewed the preparations for the Abhiyaan during a meeting at Sahyadri guest house. Minister for rural development Pankaja Munde, secretaries to the departments concerned and the chief minister's office were present at the meeting. Water resources secretary Prabhakar Deshmukh informed that a series of 10,000 cement check dams would be built in 2015-16 during this campaign.

Fadnavis said that he has asked the guardian ministers of various districts to launch the campaign on Republic Day. The campaign would be launched in 2,500 villages simultaneously.

The chief minister instructed the officials to complete the campaign by June so that water storage capacity can be increased by undertaking a number of initiatives, including de-silting of existing small dams and barrages and building new cement check dams. Fadnavis suggested that help from engineering students can be taken in this campaign by providing a nominal stipend and contractors can be given the responsibility of maintenance work for the next five years. He also suggested that 10 per cent of the funds from district planning and development committees (DPDC) can be reserved for this campaign.

Munde said that a time-bound programme would be chalked out for getting rid of drought forever from the state. She added that every drop of water would be preserved so that Maharashtra would never face water scarcity in the future.
