The Forest Department, with the help of alert wildlife lovers, rescued an injured and dehydrated sambar from Kandivali on Sunday. The animal was spotted and reported by locals of Kranti Nagar, which is located close to the fringes of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).

Locals from Kranti Nagar called Sandip Sawant, a Goregaon-based animal lover, around 9 am on Sunday, informing him about the sambar which was unable to move. "I tried contacting the forest department but my call kept getting diverted from one person to the other meanwhile I reached the spot and found that the animal had severe injuries and looked exhausted. Finally the forest department staff reached the site around noon and the mammal was transported to SGNP for treatment after a lot of difficulties," said Sawant.

Ankit Vyas, an animal rescuer, said that he reached the spot along with the forest department team within half an hour of being informed about the animal. Vyas said that the animal drank a lot of water, clearly indicating that it was thirsty and considering the hot weather they even poured water on its body which helped the mammal relax.

Dr Shailesh Pethe, Veterinary Officer, SGNP, too reached the site and informed that the sambar was exhausted due to the heat. On close inspection several abrasions and bruises were found on its skin, possibly due to a fall.

"We immediately put it on saline drips and decided to shift it to SGNP for treatment and recovery. However, lifting the 250kg animal was a challenging task for the staff as it was carried on a makeshift stretcher down the hill and through narrow bylanes till the vehicle," said Pethe, adding that the animal was now recuperating inside the park and will be released once it recovers completely.
