The Legal Metrology Organization (LMO) officials recently conducted surprise checks at the vendors on the platforms of Central and Western Railways stations. Seven such vendors were allegedly flouting norms while selling the commodities at Mumbai Central, Grant Road, Dadar and Bandra Terminus railway stations.

The LMO officials in co-ordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP) conducted the checks and found that the canteen owners had smudged the Maximum Retail Prices (MRP) on the packaged products and were selling the products on price more than its MRP.

Apart from that, at few vendors, commodities were sold at higher prices than the actual printed MRP on the products. At some vendors, products were sold without proper declarations.

"We have filed seven such cases of which two were for overcharging, one for smudging the MRP and four cases of not giving proper mandatory declarations before selling the products. Owners of the vendors flouting norms have been booked under relevant sections of the Legal Metrology Act", said an LMO official.
