After news of a maid assaulting a ten-month-old girl at Khargar crèche surfaced, the Khargar police on Friday booked the crèche's owner and the maid on charges of attempt to commit murder. Taking serious note of the incident, Navi Mumbai Commissioner of Police Hemant Nagrale issued orders to all play schools in Navi Mumbai to install CCTV cameras and get their establishment registered at the local police station. The play schools have also been asked to keep footage recordings of at least 30 days and will have to provide access whenever required by the parents.

Kharghar police had arrested maid Afsana Shaikh (29) and owner Priyanka Nikam of Purva Play School after a video emerged showing Shaikh viciously assaulting a 10-month old girl. Shaikh's act was caught in the CCTV installed in the play school.

Investigating Officer Sunil Thopate said, "We have invoked attempt to commit murder charges in the case after the victim's medical report revealed serious internal injuries. We are also checking the CCTV footage as we suspect that the accused may have assaulted other children earlier."

According to the police, the victim's parents Ruchita and Rajat Sinha found bruises on their child's body, they got her medically examined. The medical examination revealed that the girl was badly assaulted.

Initially the duo was booked under sections 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant section of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and on Friday, section 307(attempt to commit murder) of IPC was added to the list of charges.

"We have issued orders to play schools in Navi Mumbai that while employing maids, their verification should be done from the police. A proper register should be maintained by the play school of arrival and departure of parents and children and parents signature should be taken when the child is leaving the play school for the day," said Nagrale.
