A section of Jains who gathered at Khetwadi on Sunday to offer condolences to the victims of Kamla Mills tragedy - mainly Khushbu Bhansali and Kinjal Mehta - demanded CBI enquiry into the Kamla Mills fire incident and the removal of municipal commissioner.

The condolence meet was organised by Shri Vardhman Jain Parishad (SVJP), an NGO that calls itself working for the social and religious welfare of the community members. The meet that was attended by over 50 people also had a sizable number of BJP leaders including corporator Atul Shah, MLA Raj Purohit and city BJP president, Ashish Shelar.

"The authorities and hotel owners are totally responsible for this. We demand that municipal commissioner we removed and CBI conduct an enquiry. If our demands are not met then in future we will pursue them in ugra (violently) and do whatever we can as an organisation," said Lalit Bothra, president SVJP while talking to DNA.

"There were just three ambulances and Khusbhu was breathing when taken in a police van. Can authorities not even assemble 20 ambulances in two hours when there are so many of them in the city. At the hospital they did not even have electronic equipment to examine them," said Jayesh Bhansali, one of the people who were with Khusbhu on that fateful night and managed to escape.

"We demand a CBI inquiry into this incident. Merely suspending officials is not going to work. We have never heard of a corrupt officer going to jail. Merely suspending officers will not do, we want FIR to be filed against them," said Milap Mehta one of the speakers.

"It is shameful that when such a tragedy takes place, authorities do not arrange ambulances on time. The municipal corporation and the Maharashtra government are both not equipped to fight such tragedies. They need to train hotel staff and also officials," said Mahendra Angara, former president of SVJP.

Gathered people also said that parents should stop sending their kids late into the night for parties as it was "against the culture". Shelar blamed the rooftop policy of the fellow Shiv Sena with which it shares power in the state government. "Rooftop restaurants will also cause problems to people living in neighbouring residential buildings," said Shelar.

Purohit said that the policy to keep shops and restaurants open 24X7 should be scrapped. The state government had recently passed the policy.
