A day after this paper launched the dna rail revolution campaign to make suburban train travel safer and address grievances faced by commuters, a 25-year-old employee of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) lost his life after falling through the gap between the platform and footboard of the August Kranti Express at Andheri station on Monday evening. The incident follows a series of similar train mishaps which resulted in people losing their limbs and lives.

Aashish Singh had boarded the August Kranti Express at Mumbai Central, but got down when the train halted at platform number 4 of Andheri station around 6pm. A railway police official said Singh lost his grip on the door handle when he tried to board the train after it began moving. He was taken to Cooper Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The doctors said he had "severe crushed abdominal injuries" possibly from the train running over him. Top IRCTC officials visited the hospital on hearing about the incident.

A hotel management graduate, Singh was employed with the IRCTC for four years. He was in-charge of VIP catering in the August Kranti Express. "He was a very hardworking official. It is sad that we lost him in such a tragic manner," said Virendra Singh, group general manager, IRCTC, western region.

Shivaji Shinde of the Andheri railway police said a case of accidental death has been registered under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code. "The train stops at Andheri station for three minutes and it seems Singh lost his grip when he tried to board the moving local," Shinde told dna. Railway Protection Force personnel were monitoring the CCTV images of platform number four to ascertain what exactly happened. Singh's brother was expected to arrive from Delhi late on Monday night.
