The latest plan for Thane's Ghodbunder Road is a freeway. But the arterial road already has four flyovers and a metro rail is being planned, but the elevated road is proposed on the hilly section of it.Presently, the four flyovers are at Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Patlipada and Waghbil, whereras, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation is planning a Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Ghodbunder Road metro rail.

The plan is to erect the Freeway between Chena Creek and Ovala, a total of 4.4-km. This is where there is forest land of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, as a result widening of the road was not possible.Over five years ago, the widening of Ghodbunder Road was carried out from Ovala to Majiwada as part of first phase of the road widening project.According to authorities the 'Freeway' will help in decongesting the Ghodbunder Road on the 'Ghat Section' as smaller vehicles can use the elevated road and heavy vehicles would continue to ply on the existing road.

Ever since this arterial road has witnessed spurt in residential complexes in the last decade, there has been a tremendous increase in vehicular traffic particularly between Borivali-Thane via Ghodbunder Road."The entire elevated road or 'Freeway' will be 4.4-kms in length and we are yet to conduct a study on the same.

The approximate project cost is around Rs450-500 crore for 2+2 lane Freeway," said an official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).The MSRDC is yet to appoint a private agency for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 'Freeway'.Therefore, the MSRDC has not put forward the project for a formal nod from the Cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure.

At the moment, the proposal is under consideration with the Urban Development Department. This is not the first instance of MSRDC contemplating of constructing an elevated road, in the past that is in March 2012, it had floated the idea of having a 26-km elevated road Rs5,000 crore project between Dahisar-Bandra. The road was proposed on SV Road between Bandra and Santacruz followed by a 2.2-km tunnel at Juhu Aerodrome surfacing at Vile Parle near Gulmohar Road till Infinity Mall at Andheri. Thereafter, it will continue to be elevated till Dahisar on Link Road. Till date, this project remains on paper.
