A day after the Election Commission of India announced the launch of a country-wide drive to register voters from March 9, the state election office was a beehive of activity with officials busy planning the execution of the drive.

“We are planning to place advertisements in all leading newspapers to ensure a large turn out. We are also considering running ads on FM channels, but only if time permits,” said a senior officer at the chief electoral office.

The department has appointed a senior officer at each polling office for Sunday. The process of registering voters will start at 9am and go on till 6pm. Those seeking registration are expected to carry two passport size photographs, and address and identity proofs. First time voters would ne ed age-proof as well.

Meanwhile, several existing voters have been complaining about snags in the helpline numbers of the election office meant to provide details of the voters list.

Rachan Srivastava of Thane said she did not receive any response to a message she had sent to 9869889966 to find out if her name figured in the voters’ list or not.

“I sent the message around 10am on Friday, but till late in the evening, I did not get any response. I then tried calling the land-line numbers, but of the two numbers, 22621950 remained busy throughout; and the official who took the call on the four-digit number, 1950, passed the buck by giving me another helpline number reportedly meant for Thane,” said Srivastava.

While chief electoral officer Nitin Gadre remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts, other senior officers termed the snags as “possible technical errors.”  “People are mostly satisfied with our helplines. A few discrepancies, however, are possible,” said a senior officer.
