Four women, one among them pregnant, died and five others were injured early Monday morning when the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into stationary sand-loaded truck near Saphale.

When Sangeeta Chimda (20) started having labour pains she was rushed to a sub health centre. However, since the centre was closed, her husband sought help from emergency helpline number 108. Getting no response from the helpline, he hired a Tata Magic van (MH 48 A 3443) and soon they were speeding on the Varai-Saphale road towards a hospital in Manor.

As they were reaching Saphale, Vinayak Parab, the driver of the van rammed into the truck (MH 04 GF 200) from behind, which was parked near Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. The four women were killed on the spot. The injured were rushed to Manor Primary Health Centre for treatment.

"When we rushed her to the health centre it was shut. So, we tried reaching helpline 108. But we did not get any help from them and soon decided to hire a mini van and rush to the hospital in Manor," said Kalpesh Chimda, husband of the deceased pregnant woman.

Maruti Patil, assistant inspector of Manor police station, said: "We have registered a case under sections 304(a) (causing death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act against the drivers of both the vehicles. We have arrested Parab but the truck driver is absconding. We are investigating the case further."

"The five injured persons are recuperating and their condition is stated to be stable," he added.
