With September being the Alzheimer's awareness month, a group of four girls from Thane called Making A Difference (MAD) are engaged in creating awareness about it. Their efforts include a series of online and offline activities so that people not only help those who are suffering from Alzheimer's, but also take preventive measures for themselves.

Talking about their activities, Asira Yogesh Chirmulye, a member of this one-year-old group, says, "We have created a 21-page booklet called Prevention of Alzheimer's and on September 21, which was World Alzheimer's Day, it was released online by Dr Vinayak Joshi, an eminent neurosurgeon from Thane."

They have mailed the booklet, a photo album of their exhibition and engaging brain puzzles as preventive measures to 400 email addresses.

Besides this, Chirmulye, who is a clinical psychologist and has done her Master thesis on it, has also created a Facebook page which she has been updating since September 1. "I upload one page from the booklet daily as well as recent researches on the disease in India and abroad on the Facebook page," she says, adding, "We also did an interview of Dr Joshi where he spoke about the importance of stimulating oneself mentally through puzzles and hobbies. People should take time out for their hobbies and mental stimulation as a preventive measure to keep Alzheimer's at bay."

On September 18, they distributed 5,000 booklets in 4,000 households of Thane. "We took the help of newspaper distributors, chemists and book depots," she says.

In future, MAD wants to organise seminars for caregivers of Alzheimer's patients and build a resource network.
