Demonetization of currency has hit hard the narcotics trade in the city as well. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sleuths on Sunday nabbed a Dahisar based man possessed with prescribed and prohibited drugs. The man had brought the consignment from Gujarat, but received no takers. The arrested person has been identified as Sadanand Vamanrao Rane, 56, a resident of Rawal Pada in Dahisar (E).

According to NCB sources, on receipt of specific information, a raid was conducted in a room in Rawal Pada in Dahisar and 55 bottles of Corex syrup, 200 tablets of Alprazolam and 200 tablets of Tramadol Camcodex were seized.

Speaking of these drugs, an official said, “Corex is a prescribed medicine, Alprazolam is commonly used for treatment of panic disorder or anxiety disorder, while Tramadol is a pain reliever. Tramadol is banned in foreign countries, but not in India. Rane used to earlier run a pharmaceutical shop in Dahisar and his license was suspended by the FDA officials. He brings drugs on alternate days. He brings around 200 to 300 bottles into the city.”

“We received a tip-off that a huge consignment of drugs from Gujarat would be arriving in Mumbai. Subsequently we worked on the information and nabbed Rane. During interrogation Rane told NCB that a huge consignment was supposed to come from Gujarat, but due to illegal tendering of Rs500 and Rs1000 notes, he could not procure the consignment. The seized consignment has been with Rane for past two days as there were no recipients to pick up the consignment,” the official said.

As per the NCB, demonetization has hit the drug world in a huge way as drug dealers are unable to procure and sell drugs anymore. “Demonetization of big denomination currencies has also forced those dealing in narcotics to stall their operations as there is shortage of money in the market. NCB is keeping a close watch on everyone in the narcotics trade so as to neutralise them,” the official said.
