Maharashtra chief minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday held a conference with senior state police officers at the DGP office wherein he discussed with them about the problems and hindrances they face from the government and sought suggestions.
Chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya and additional chief secretary (home) Amitabh Rajan were also present in the meeting. Speaking to the media, Fadnavis liste some of the issues that were discussed.

Convictions, investigations and govt hurdles
Issues such as how investigation and rate of conviction should be improved and how effective work can be done on the issues of crime against children, women, terrorism, naxalism and radicalism were discussed. The CM also took stock of the challenges and problems police face while addressing these challenges, from the government. The police department also brought forth their suggestions. The CM told the department that the government supports decentralisation of rights and hence it would empower the force. Purchase rights of the DGP who heads the force is still what it used to be in 1973 and expansion is required. The force was also made aware about the expectations of the government from them.

CCTVs and nonfunctional speed boats
Proposal for CCTVs for Mumbai has been given a push. Also proposal for installing CCTVs in police station is being prepared. The CM also took stock as to why the boats were lying non-functional and was told that the existing system is such, even a small glitch in repairs or maintenance of the boats was delayed. The CM said steps are being taken to ensure that boats do not lie non-functional for small or petty reason.

Pendancy in forensic cases
The CM agreed that currently, capacity of the state FSL is much less compounded with high pendancy rate. In cyber crime cases, there have been pendancy of three years. The government is going to ensure expansion of the laboratory and come out with measures to make the department more capable.

Police modernisation and utilisation of funds
In police modernisation, the issue is that most times funds are not properly utilised. In the existing system, required rights are not given to officials at different levels and the decisions not taken on time.
Police housing
Since past many years for police housing there have been demands such as increase in FSI. Some decisions have been taken and some files have been sanctioned. The CM assured that there will be no pendancy on the police housing issue.

Curbing misuse of social media
With the belief that social and digital media are being misused to spread rumours, the CM said the government id for keeping a check. However, he clarified that he was not proposing censorship but to stop the misuse, the social media laboratory of police will have to be more equipped.

Coordination, interference and pendancy
Fight against terrorism should be in coordination with the centre. As far as political interference in police postings and favouritism is concerned, the CM said he would ensure that it is not so. In corruption cases waiting for prosecution sanction, Fadnavis spoke of devising a way wherein either decision taking is fast-tracked or if not, there should be a system to ensure so in within a time frame.
