River March — a citizen's movement that has been demanding rejuvenation of all the four rivers in the city — is meeting with authorities to seek more check dams not only across Dahisar river but also Poisar and Oshiwara.

According to Gopal Jhaveri, founder of River March, the movement has already identified two more locations along the stretch of Dahisar river — one at Daulat Nagar in Borivali (east) and another near Rustomjee School in Dahisar (west).

"Similarly, we are seeking two check dams for Poisar river too. One at Kranti Nagar and another at Damu Nagar. We are in talks with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Forest Department and we are also seeking help from the Art Of Living (AOL) Foundation to build these Kolhapuri-type check dams," he said. He said these could prove to be a master stroke in reclaiming stretches of rivers.

According to activists, the problem at large is that except during monsoons, the rivers are more or less like open drains wherein the general public keeps tossing garbage. "With check dams, we can control the flow of water that will help in the improvement of the biodiversity of rivers as well as refill the groundwater. Also, once citizens find such stretches filled with water, they will understand why having rivers is important. The stretches can be made more attractive and be turned into tourist spots," said Tejas Shah, member of River March.

"Funds will be a major concern and that is the reason we have already begun having a series of meetings with officials and all have shown positive support initially," Jhaveri said.
