Kharghar: Garbage near societies and public places is an issue that Navi Mumbaikars have been struggling since long. Residents have complaints against garbage pickers as they do not clean the area properly.

Considering this problem, City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (Cidco) has decided to hire new agencies to keep a watch on garbage pickers. This has been done so that the work is done systematically and on time.

Cidco will be giving contract to the agencies which already have an experience in this work. If the work will be found improper, the agencies will be charged. The contract will be given by February or March on an annual basis and what pay will be given to the workers has not yet been decided.

Kharghar, Kalamboli, Kamothe and New Panvel, which are under Cidco, have 745 workers hired by the health department and the contract of garbage vehicles is with Bharat Vikas Group (BVG) company. To look after the cleanliness of these nodes, Cidco only has ten officers. It gets difficult for these officers to visit the nodes personally sometimes which leads to untidiness.

A resident of Kharghar said, “It will be a great idea if Cidco gives contract to new agencies, as it will save us from the offensive smell and dirty area soon.”

A resident of New Panvel said, “I will be grateful to Cidco if it takes the step to hire new agencies, as I am extremely disappointed by the work done by the garbage pickers presently. They do not bother to clean the area near dustbin and the garbage is left as it is.”

Another resident said, “The agencies should focus on all nodes and Cidco should hire good agencies for the supervision of garbage pickers so that we can live our life in a healthy state.”

BS Bavaskar, chief medical officer of Cidco, said, “The reason behind giving contract to new agencies is that we have less officers for monitoring garbage cleaners. They will work properly under the supervision of the agencies.”
