With the new Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee Chairman calling for the much-delayed audit reports from the civic administration, the audit department will soon visit the civic body's health and education departments to complete the audit process that has been pending for the past several years. The highest number of audit queries are pending with these two departments, and the audit wing has now decided to hasten the process by visiting these department directly.
Pressure has been mounting on the civic administration to complete the audit process, which has been pending for 22 years, and a demand for completing the audits of the civic departments has been raised by newly elected members.
According to an audit department official, around 25 per cent of audit compliance reports have been pending with different BMC departments, thereby stalling the auditing process.
Another official from the BMC's audit department said the maximum compliance or audit queries have been pending with the health and education departments. "As these two departments have the maximum number of audit queries, the audit department has decided to visit the offices of these two departments to complete the process quickly," said the official, adding that around 3,000 and 1,000 audit queries are pending with the health and education departments, respectively.
The issue cropped up again at the last standing committee meeting, when a status report on pending audit reports since 1993-94 was submitted. The BJP, along with opposition members, demanded that audit remarks be submitted soon to the committee. They also demanded that the Municipal Commissioner and Chief Auditor submit their remarks before the standing committee, and if they fail, they would not clear this year's civic budget.
