In a politically significant state like Maharashtra, BJP President Amit Shah has set some audacious goals for his state party unit. Shah will hold a marathon meeting in Mumbai with MPs, legislators and district unit chiefs on April 6.

Interestingly, the venue of interaction is MCA Club, located at the backyard of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's Matoshree residence. In a typical no-nonsense style, Shah will make his party members accountable and answerable on three fronts — strengthening the party organisation at all 92,000 booths, improve Lok Sabha seats tally if going solo and in case an alliance with disgruntled ally Shiv Sena clicks then win at least 40 plus seats out of 48 in the state. He will also conduct a quick performance audit of his party colleagues from the state in the meeting.

BJP, who fought last general election with Shiv Sena, won 23 seats while ally Shiv Sena won 18 seats. In absence of a truck with Sena, the party has set an ambitious target of winning more than 35 seats.

Senior BJP's three term legislator said, "After a sterling performance in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in 2014, BJP has continued its victory march in civic and local body elections to consolidate its grip. The party will have to approach voters on the government's performance as Modi charisma and Mr Clean image of CM Devendra Fadnavis alone will not be sufficient. Shah's message will be avoid complacency and become aggressive against opposition Congress and NCP especially when they are stepping up attack against the party led government."

Another legislator from Vidarbha insisted that efficiency and winning ability need to be the criteria for the selection of candidates. "Party should not entertain defectors but will give due recognition to its own workers in the ticket distribution. Besides, coordination between the government and party organization will have to be further streamlined in the run up to elections," he said.

He informed that Shah will also address a rally at the plush Bandra Kurla Complex, which will be organised on same day to celebrate party's foundation day. Shah's visit comes at a time when BJP's ruling ally Shiv Sena leaves no stone unturned in taking potshots at BJP-led government at the Centre and in Maharashtra on an array of issues. Besides Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray at his party's national executive meeting held in January had declared to independently fight all upcoming elections.
