Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, popularly called Balbharati, has registered an FIR against unknown persons at Dadar police station on Wednesday for leaking the content of the its textbook on social media. The leaked content is from Science 1 and Science 2 books of Class 10. The book is expected to release by end of April for the next academic year.

Cases of leaked exam question papers have happened before. However, it is for the first time that a case of theft and cheating have been registered for making content of a school textbook available on social media. The content of the books had gone viral.

Sunil Magar, Director of the Bureau, said, “The content of the Balbharati textbook was taking rounds on WhatsApp. One of our employees had received that message. While there is no loss per say, unlike case of question paper leak, it is not correct nonetheless. So we have registered a case against unknown person. The cyber cell is also investigating the matter. ”

Till last year the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education used to publish the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) textbooks. But this year the responsibility was passed on to Balbharati to ensure textbooks release on time before the schools open.

Divakar Shelke, senior inspector, Dadar police station, said, “Balbharati officials have registered a case in our police station against unknown persons for stealing the digital content of their textbooks. The case is registered under IPC Sections 379 and 420 for theft and cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property and also some IT sections have been applied in FIR.”
