83-year-old woman mowed down by speeding truck in Colaba

An ​83-year-old woman​ was​ mowed down by a speeding ice truck on Friday afternoon near Regal Cinema, Colaba. The woman, identified as Winnie Kapadia was crossing the road when the accident took place. The truck driver fled from the spot after the incident took place, however, ​he ​was held at Lions Gate, Colaba by the traffic police.

According to Senior Police Inspector of Colaba police station, Vijay Dhopavkar. “The victim was rushed to St George hospital, Fort where she was declared dead on arrival. The 28-year-old driver has been arrested from the spot.”

Speaking about the incident, Dhopavkar said, “The victim was​ crossing the road ​when the speeding truck mowed her down. While the victim was left in a pool of blood, the driver did not stop and fled.”

Another police off​i​cer said, “When we caught the driver, he denied having mowed down the victim. However, we checked the CCTV footage near the spot and ​also had ​eye​-​witnesses who called the control room ​about the incident.

The witness also gave the truck license plate number​.​

Besides, the victim's son and daughter​-​in​-​law too were ​near the spot and confirmed the incident.”

The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
