Sandip Waman Patil, a 35-year-old builder, who was also into sand mining business, was shot dead around 9.45am at Sabegaon village, a remote area in Diva–Thane, on Monday. Two rounds were fired at him, one hit him and the other went astray. The victim was also attacked with swords and sharp weapons. Patil's father was a witness to the incident.

After the assailants left the place, Sandip Waman Patil's father and some others took him to AIMS Hospital in Dombivli where he succumbed to his injuries.

After the Mumbra police were informed, DCP, ACP and senior police inspector rushed to the spot. After briefly analyzing the situation, Mumbra police said the deceased had been shot on account of a simmering land dispute involving members of his family and members of their community that had been going on for the past few months.

The police who are investigating the case have found a live cartridge too, and have lodged a case against two known and eight unknown assailants under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 120 (concealing design to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code, and several sections of Rioting Act, Indian Weapons Act and Bombay Police Act.

The two known accused have been identified as Nagraj Vishnu Patil and Kedar Vishnu Patil, who along with the other eight are absconding. All of them are from village Sabegaon.

A police official who requested anonymity said: "The deceased as well as the assailants were involved in sand mining business. They have had issues in the past too. Sandip Waman Patil died after being attacked with sharp weapons. He was attacked by seven to eight people and had several wounds on his body."

The deceased, who was heading towards his office in Sabegaon village for routine work along with a few colleagues, was stopped by the gang of assailants on the way. One of them opened fire, and soon others attacked him. Those accompanying Sandip Waman Patil ran away from the spot. The deceased was bleeding profusely and succumbed to his injuries while getting admitted to the hospital.

P Budhwant, DCP of Zone I, said: "We have registered a case as per the complaint lodged by Patil's father. He is an eye witness. All the accused are absconding. It was some issue related to land. We have asked our officers to arrest the culprit as soon as possible, and are investigating."
