The Bandra police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the rape of a 27-year-old Spanish national.

The Bandra police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the rape of a 27-year-old Spanish national. “Mohammad Badshah alias Mohammad Ismail Ansari (pictured) is serial offender having committed several robberies in Bandra, Khar and Byculla. He was arrested from his Reay Road residence on suspicion. He will be produced in the Bandra court on Wednesday,” said DS Patil, inspector at the Bandra police station.

The Spaniard came to Mumbai on a German visa to learn Indian classical music after getting a scholarship. She was alone at her rented flat in Bandra (West) when she was robbed and raped at knifepoint between 4am and 5am on Monday.

“The victim has identified the suspect through his photographs. There are scratches on Badshah’s forearms and back, but he has yet to confess that he raped the Spaniard,” said an investigating officer.

Sources said Badshah also broke into actor Dino Morea’s house in Bandra’s Leo Street on October 27 and robbed him. He has been involved in more than 28 house break-ins and robberies in the city.

“We have found footprints from the victim’s residence, but have yet to recover the knife he used to threaten the foreign national. We are trying to collect the stolen booty as well as medical, forensic and circumstantial evidence,” the officer said.
The rape victim will travel to Germany by the end of the week where her parents stay and where she works as a music director. “After seeing how the victim’s identification parade goes, we will take judicial custody of the suspect and then his police custody for further investigation,” the officer told DNA.

The suspect also robbed writer Dilip D’Souza’s 79-year-old mother Neela of Rs6,000 in the wee hours of Monday. He barged into her Bandra house and fled with a mobile phone and cash. His robbery attempt at a nearby bungalow failed.

The police said the culprit then made his way into the Spaniard’s flat with the intention to rob her. He had a knife with him and asked her to hand over her gold ornaments and money. Terrified, the girl ran out of the house and knocked on her neighbour’s door, but there was no one in the house. The culprit then dragged her into the flat and raped her.

She locked herself in the bathroom and screamed for help when the culprit began searching the house for cash and valuables. Hearing her screams, residents of nearby buildings informed the police and came to her rescue. The culprit escaped in the meantime.
