A second-year electrical engineering student from Amravati was arrested on May 18 for extortion and sending threatening messages to a manager of a hotel located in south Mumbai. The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of Mumbai crime branch carried out the investigation and tracked the accused to Amravati.

Lorence Francis Rodrix, manager of hotel Residency in Fort, had filed a complaint with the MRA Marg police on May 17, alleging that someone had been sending him threatening messages from an unknown number since May 8, and demanding Rs1 crore. Rodrix told the police that the sender threatened to blow up the hotel as well as kill him and his family, if he failed to deposit the money in a bank account number provided by the accused.

After registration of the FIR, senior police Inspector Vinayak Vast, inspector Sachin Kadam, assistant police inspector Vishwas Patil and constable Subhas Choudhar of AEC launched a parallel investigation in the case.

AEC officials traced the unknown number to Amravati. "With the help of technical analysis, we traced the number to Amravati. A detailed study of the phone location revealed that the accused also belonged to Amravati. We realised that sending a team to Amravati will lead to wastage of time. So, we sought help from the Amravati crime branch."

After receiving specific information from the AEC officials, on May 18, the Amravati crime branch picked up the accused, a second-year electrical engineering student of a college located in Amravati.

During interrogation, the suspect told the police that he was in dire need of money to pay his college fees and that is why he sent the message to Rodrix. He also told the police that he got the number of Rodrix from a website, which had details of many other hotels. Police suspect the accused might have sent such messages to many other hotel managers and companies.

When contacted, additional commissioner of police ( crime), KMM Prasanna, said, "It was an excellent investigation done by AEC. We arrested the accused within 24 hours of launching the investigation."
