Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an interview, said, people borrowing money from the country and taking it overseas or laundering it, is an opportunity for him. He said he will take this up and show the offenders "what the Modi government is". The interview was conducted by Times Now.

Modi was answering a question posed to him in the interview, on his views about the perception that was created for his government because of "those who have borrowed money from the country and consequently gone abroad and were then using the law to avoid justice."

Modi said, "I will take this as an opportunity; I will show them what (the) Modi government is.

While his name wasn't mentioned, it was certain, that the indication was towards the now-grounded Kingfisher Airlines' Vijay Mallya, who is facing several cases in the country from various government agencies for non-payment of dues amounting to Rs 9,000 crore to the airlines' lenders.

It was also a warning for other such offenders.

On March 2, as the grip started tightening around Mallya, with pressure from the company's 17 lenders to pay back the dues, he flew to London and has been here since. Mallya has successfully ignored several summons from the Enforcement Directorate and the courts, and even an extradition attempt by the government failed to bring him back to the country to face justice.

The ED is now pushing for a red corner notice from the Interpol for Mallya after completing all the legal procedures required to acquire it.

Modi also spoke sternly about those sheltering black money, and reiterated that his appeal to his countrymen to use the black money compliance window to disclose the income before September 30, in Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, was indeed a warning.
