A smokeless chulha, a bag-cum-desk and notebooks made from recycled waste paper helped students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi clinch the gruelling Enactus India competition.

Held at Gurgaon, the two-day event saw participation of over 3000 students from over 90 colleges around the country. The winning team from IIT Delhi will now present the projects at the Enactus World Cup this year, to be held at Johannesburg, South Africa between October 14 - 16, 2015.

The team, led by Praneeth Buriyu, has 47 members participating in the winning Enactus projects. Runners-up included Ramjas College, Delhi, followed by Hansraj College, Delhi.

In IIT Delhi's project, named Excelsior, the team collected waste papers from urban areas, recycled them and made paper notebooks. They also made a unique design for a bag-cum-desk completely made out of cardboard, which can serve both as a bag to carry one's belongings and a desk to write upon. The students also made a kit, available for only Rs 30, for children in underprivileged sections. The kit included the bag-cum-desk, recycled notebooks, four pencils and an eraser. The team also presented Aanch, a smokeless chullah for the underprivileged sections of society.

Farhan Pettiwala, president, Enactus India, said that the children have over the years presented remarkable projects. "Last year, students of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies came up with a sanitary pad for one rupee. And when the global head of Procter and Gamble heard the presentation, he said we've been innovating since 25 years, and could never do it," said Pettiwala.

Enactus India has chapters in over 90 colleges in India. Around the world, it is present in 36 countries with over 70,000 active student members spread across 1700 universities. The winning team last year came up with spectacle for just a dollar.

Punit Goenka, CEO and MD, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, who was one of the judges of the final event, said that he was overwhelmed to see the ingenuity of the children. "The energy levels of the young minds here are simply electrifying. It is amazing to witness their potential and zeal to make a difference," he said.

The event saw the presence of Richard Rekhy, CEO, KPMG in India, Sanjiv Mehta, CEO and managing director, Hindustan Unilever Limited, Anita Arjundas, managing director and CEO at Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd, Krish Iyer, president and CEO, Walmart India addressing the young audience in discussions. Venkatesh Kini, CEO, Coca Cola India delivered a motivating closing keynote address encouraging students to continue their innovative community entrepreneurship projects.
