Cabinet approves Rs 3,705 crore per MHZ as base price for 3G spectrum auction, to raise Rs 18,525 crore

The government had earlier given its nod reserve price, quantum, user charges and other issues for putting airwaves on the block.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Wednesday that Cabinet has approved Rs 3,705 crore per MHZ as base price for 3G spectrum auction.

The Telecom Commission (TC) panel had recommended a reserve price of Rs 3,705 crore per MHz against the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai) Rs 2,720 crore per MHz. The government stands to raise Rs 18,525 crore from this auction as against Rs 13,600 crore if it had agreed to TRAI's recommendation.

The price suggested by the ministerial panel is about 11% higher than 2010 3G spectrum price and 36% more than Trai's price.

The government had earlier given its nod reserve price, quantum, user charges and other issues for putting airwaves on the block.

The inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission (TC) has suggested a base price of Rs 3,705 crore per megahertz (MHz) as 3G spectrum base price for upcoming auction, about 11% higher than what companies paid for the same in 2010 sale.

GSMA, an industry body, however, said that high 3G spectrum base price of Rs 3,705 crore recommended by inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission and less quantum of airwaves being put for auction will adversely impact development Indian mobile networks.
