There's some great news for those looking for careers in the IT-BPO sectors. From about 3 million at present, the twin sectors will go on to employ 10 million in seven years, says industry body Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies).

And not just engineering and MBA graduates, even those with degrees in commerce, arts or science can look forward towards various roles in the sector. Releasing a report on the 2020 vision for the IT-BPO industry in the city, IT sector stalwarts like NR Narayana Murthy and TCS CEO N Chandrasekaran said the industry has a vision to garner revenues of $300 billion in seven years, up from $108 billion in 2012, and this growth will also imply heavy job creation.

"People working in the sector see many opportunities. At present 3 million professionals work in the sector, making it one of the largest private sector employers. There will be many more jobs going ahead," said Chandrasekaran.

The average age of employees in the IT-BPO sector is 26-27 years, with 30% of the workforce being women, says Nasscom. Nasscom founder Ashank Desai said companies have been hiring graduates in B.Com, MSc, BSc, MCA etc apart from the usual engineers and MBAs. "In a IT firm, usually they start on testing and programming roles and then gradually move on as project leaders," said Desai.

Currently while graduates in arts are taken in various BPOs for roles in data entry, voice-related work and  administration, those with commerce backgrounds go into finance and accounting related activities. While for BSc graduates, the scope also covers jobs in research and development-related activities.

Starting salaries in the IT sector at present range from Rs 2.2-3.5 lakhs per year, which can go up to Rs5 lakhs for freshers from prestigious institutions. While starting pay in the BPO sector largely hovers around Rs8,000-20,000 per month or even a monthly Rs25,000 in some firms.

Experts say though the hiring market is slow right at the moment, going ahead, both the IT-BPO sector and the job market will grow at a rapid speed.

Within the sector, niche segments like healthcare BPOs, of which several are in Bangalore, are also witnessing quick progression, thereby unleashing job opportunities. Gopi Natarajan, CEO of city-based healthcare BPO firm Omega Healthcare says graduates from diverse streams like life sciences, zoology, botany, homeopathy, microbiology can now work in BPOs engaging in work related to analytics, voice-based, medical transcriptions, electronic health records, medical coding etc.
