For years now Jehangir Art Gallery has been the first choice of every artist in India to showcase his/her works.

But the 118-year-old reputed Bombay Art Society is soon going to open a huge art space at the Bandra Reclamation, exactly opposite Rang Sharda auditorium, aiming to be another mammoth art space.

If an upcoming artist wants to show at Jehangir he might have to wait for four to five years and if one is an established name or a private gallery, one might be able to shorten the waiting period. But this new art space which is unnamed as yet  hopes to offload the
burden from Jehangir.

Chairperson of the Bombay Art Society, Vitthal Lokhankar, says, “We had proposed for this space to the government almost 10 years ago. Though we did get a space from MHADA around five years ago, it ran into dispute and twice the space was taken away from us. But now the structure is half ready and will hopefully function by next year.”

He adds, “Just like Jehangir, this place will also rent out space for the span of a week, and that too at nominal prices. The artists will be selected by a selection panel.”

However, what is new here is that the upcoming space also promises to have a good infrastructure to show new media works like huge installations and video art. Vitthal asserts, “Jehangir is a heritage building. We can’t even build a lift there but this space will have all facilities. We are not just creating an exhibition space but also a library, auditorium, mini-theatre, cafeteria and a shop from where artists can buy fine quality art tools and stationery.”

While Vitthal agrees that Jehangir Art Gallery will still be a preferred location (the first preference for most artists), we do agree that another such gallery in the western suburbs is definitely welcome. And Vitthal subtly also adds, “Whatever loopholes
Jehangir has, we will try to avoid those here.”
