She made her foray into music with Viva — the pop band. It has been almost 10 years since, and looking back, Neha Bhasin feels the journey has been “a mix”.
“I always knew what I wanted but just got a little disillusioned for a while,” says Neha as she explains how playback singing never helped her develop as an artist. Neha thinks playback singing never really lets an artist find his own style. “It was so difficult to understand what my music is,” says Neha as she recalls the days when she was a part of Viva.
“It is an uninhibited album,” asserts Neha, it is like “my baby”. “It reflects the two facets of my persona — black and white. There is a part of me which is aggressive and demure, the other side being bright, sexy and lively,” she adds.
The album Tabaah has a total of nine songs which touch upon all of her favourite music genres and capture the rhapsodies and the blues of her life. “I write with experience.” The title track Tabaah (an urdu word meaning ‘destruction’), speaks of her bad relationship.
There is a palpable energy in her aura and it can certainly be sensed in her music as well. “People ruffle me up,” she says with a spark. Neha has been writing songs since she was in the 11th standard. Her biggest inspiration has been Michael Jackson. “He was a larger than life figure. I always wanted to be a performer like him, to be a part of the audio-visual medium and not be a routine singer who is told to warble what the director asks him to.”
Neha finds it frustrating that people have a ‘defined vision of a pop star’. “I was constantly told by people around that I need to lose weight to make it big, but I never got a dietician or got unnerved.”
