The recent fuel hike has affected almost every sector of the entertainment industry. A night out of partying can easily burn a hole in your pocket and even ‘hanging’ out with friends — to catch with a bottle of chilled beer and starters seems like an expensive deal.

But hang on, there still are a few joints in the city that don’t threaten to drain your wallet and yet provide a place to meet up and chat away in. Take for instance Sunlight bar and restaurant at Dhobi Talao.

A favourite with the youth, the name of this joint is misleading — it’s snugly built, allowing no  natural light to enter the haunt. But beer flows cheap and the nearby college crowd swears by the starters. A budget of Rs300 can easily fetch you a large bottle of beer and a starter or two.

Gokul, opposite Bade Miyan at Colaba is another such joint that is frequently visited by advertising professionals, looking for a place to brain storm or unwind at. Again, an inexpensive bottle of beer and a plate of chicken or fish should not exceed Rs300. But be prepared for incessant chatter in the background.

Janta at Bandra is most visited by young guns looking to save a few bucks and well-heeled professionals who couldn’t procure a table at nearby fancy pubs. But once here, they’re all equals and are seen diving straight into the inexpensive alcohol and quick bites.

However, though these joints offer yummy food and alcohol at down to earth prices, they are stripped of any sort of decor. So don’t expect fancy tables, plush toilets or even a butler like steward to pamper you.

And of course, no disco lights to appease your senses or space to shake a leg if you suddenly feel like. But all that can be overlooked considering you are more likely to focus on gulping down as much as you can and forget the rest!

Other affordable places:
Pop Tates and Jughead outlets across the city: Drop by when they have their Happy Hours menu up for grabs.

Sports Bar: Again a big hit during happy hours and when a match — cricket, football or tennis is being screened.

Toto’s: Not quite as inexpensive but still a better choice than more hi fi pubs in the city, when it comes to saving a penny or two.
